Maxwell and Gous Lead Washington Freedom to Top Two Finish in MLC 2025
Washington Freedom secured a crucial top-two finish in the 2025 Major League Cricket standings with a six-wicket win over MI New York, thanks to a dominant bowling performance from Glenn Maxwell and a composed chase anchored by Andries Gous. The result locks Washington into Qualifier 1, while MI New York, despite the loss, also advances to the playoffs based on Net Run Rate.
Washington Bowlers Capitalize on Turn-Friendly Pitch
With rain reducing the match to 18 overs per side, MI New York rested several key players and tested a young lineup. The decision reflected their confidence in qualifying due to a favorable Net Run Rate. However, Washington’s spinners made the most of the conditions at Broward County Stadium.
Glenn Maxwell led the bowling effort with 3 for 29, striking twice early to break MI New York’s momentum. Glenn Phillips delivered a brilliant spell, claiming two wickets for just four runs in a single over and removing the middle order’s hopes of revival.
Only debutant Kunwarjeet Singh showed resistance, scoring a composed 33 and displaying maturity under pressure. Sunny Patel and Heath Richards added late runs to push MI New York to 112 for 8, a total that proved insufficient against Washington’s batting depth.
Gous Finishes the Job with Unbeaten Knock
Washington began the chase with a minor stutter. Mitchell Owen and Rachin Ravindra fell early, but Mark Chapman provided stability with a quick 27 off 18 balls. After Chapman and Maxwell departed in close succession, Andries Gous took charge.
Gous timed his innings perfectly, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. He scored 46 not out from 34 balls, including three crucial boundaries in the 14th over that broke the back of the chase. Washington reached the target in 15 overs with 18 balls to spare.
What This Means for the Playoffs
- Washington Freedom finish the league stage in the top two, earning a spot in Qualifier 1 and giving themselves two chances to reach the final.
- MI New York, despite the defeat, qualifies for the Eliminator with a fourth-place finish. Their Net Run Rate kept them ahead of Seattle Orcas, who also ended with six points.
- Both teams will now travel to Dallas for the playoff stage starting Tuesday, July 8.
