Why Vishal Dadlani’s The Playlist Matters for Independent Music in India
India’s music scene is full of talented artists, including singers, rappers, and producers creating original work, yet opportunities to perform in front of industry decision-makers remain limited. As is the case with the acceptance of indie music, audiences still often prefer mainstream or cinema-led music.
That is what makes Vishal Dadlani’s new initiative, The Playlist, particularly interesting. Rather than searching for the next industry playback singer, the platform focuses exclusively on artists who perform their own work and build careers around original music. Sanskar Savvy wants to Celebrate Vishal for this new venture, Explore what this means for upcoming artists and Connect with this initiative.
What is The Playlist?
Vishal Dadlani initiated The Playlist as a live music discovery platform. It gives artists, including singers, songwriters, producers, rappers, and bands, an opportunity to perform songs they have written and created themselves, shifting the spotlight from interpretation to individuality. The goal is to create opportunities for artists outside the traditional cinema playback route.
While music competitions are common and have launched successful careers, they reward vocal ability through covers of existing songs. They often focus on how well artists recreate something audiences already know. However, The Playlist asks a different question: What do you sound like as an artist?
For independent musicians, original music is often more important than covers. It gives artists a chance to showcase their writing, voice, storytelling, production choices, influences, and creative identity.
Why This Matters for Independent Artists
The value of a platform, such as The Playlist, goes far beyond a single performance. For emerging artists, visibility remains one of the most difficult challenges in the industry. Thousands of artists are creating excellent music, but opportunities to perform in front of influential decision-makers are relatively rare.
Established professionals can open doors for independent artists that would otherwise take years to unlock. Exposure can lead to collaborations, performance opportunities, recording projects, mentorship, and industry connections that help artists continue building their careers.
Just as importantly, it sends a message that original music has value. Many emerging musicians spend years refining their sound without an active audience. Platforms like The Playlist provide validation for that work and encourage artists to continue investing in their own creative identities.
Why Vishal Dadlani’s Involvement Matters
In many ways, the initiative reflects the direction the music industry itself has been moving. Today’s artists increasingly build communities around songs, stories, and creative voices. By centering original music, The Playlist is helping create space for exactly that, and the fact that it’s coming from Vishal Dadlani makes it significantly more impactful. As half of the duo Vishal-Sheykhar, he has spent over two decades shaping the sound of modern Bollywood with consistent hits for audiences beyond India. His experience gives emerging artists perspective, credibility, and access to resources that are otherwise very difficult.
When someone of Vishal’s stature speaks about the importance of original music and highlights it, people pay attention and instantly trust his platform. He started this project on Instagram in January this year, recognizing the need for more artists with original music and his plan to make something for them.
Eventually, he started this as ‘Vishal’s Trial Shows,’ inviting original-music artists from diverse backgrounds and musical styles to sign up and perform. This led to the first few shows receiving more than a thousand entries, prompting him to create The Playlist, which currently accepts entries from artists across India.
This project also demonstrates that supporting new talent does not always require a grand show; it could be something much simpler, such as creating a platform where artists can be discovered.
By creating a platform centered around original music, Vishal is demonstrating how established industry figures can play a direct role in supporting the next generation of artists. An interesting follow-up question is whether more established music professionals could create similar opportunities for emerging artists? If so, what would they look like, and what would they offer musicians, not just in India but internationally? How does this emerging indie music scene shape the future of music, and how will artists retain a sense of independence when opportunities like playbacks, record deals, or even bigger prospects are offered to them?
A Bigger Conversation About Representation
While regularly promoting the show and inviting artists to submit their music, Vishal has maintained a friendly and supportive environment. He has even addressed in his recent clips how the platform did not receive as many applications from women as he had hoped, prompting him to actively call for greater participation.
While this observation was in the context of this initiative, it also touches on a broader industry conversation. India is home to countless talented female singers, songwriters, musicians, and producers. As the independent music scene continues to grow, ensuring that more women feel encouraged and empowered to participate remains an important part of that growth. Vishal’s comments and encouragement for more women to submit their work spotlight this conversation that goes beyond The Playlist itself and ensure that such opportunities are accessible to as many voices as possible.
The Impact of Vishal’s New Initiative
The Playlist feels like a significant platform because, at its core, it understands the musician’s point of view and knows that talent exists everywhere; it needs opportunities. More than just finding ‘the next big artist’, it is about creating an environment where artists have a genuine chance of being heard and supported by one of India’s most renowned music directors.
As India’s independent music scene continues to grow, the industry will need more spaces like The Playlist that encourage creativity, originality, and discovery. Whether those spaces come from music directors, record labels, performers, festivals, or streaming platforms, the principal goal is to invest in artists today and help shape the music industry of tomorrow.
