June Highlights: A Look Back at Last Month in Cinema

June kept the momentum going with a diverse slate of South Asian releases, from psychological thrillers and historical epics to fantasy adventures and dark comedies. Several major stars returned to the screen, while regional cinema continued to deliver some of the month’s most talked-about stories.

Brown: Karisma Kapoor starred in this psychological crime thriller, playing Rita Brown, a troubled Kolkata police officer investigating a string of ritualistic murders. The series blended crime, psychological drama, and mystery against the backdrop of Kolkata.

Karuppu: Suriya teamed up with Trisha Krishnan in this fantasy-action drama directed by RJ Balaji. Suriya led a story that combined mythology, action, and social justice in one of Tamil cinema’s most ambitious releases of the month.

Maa Behen: Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri headlined this black comedy thriller about a fiercely independent mother and her daughters who become entangled in an accidental death. Combining dark humour with family drama, the film stood out for its unconventional premise and ensemble cast.

Raakh: Ali Fazal starred in this gritty investigative thriller set in 1970s Delhi. As a rookie police officer searching for kidnapped children, he uncovers a disturbing criminal underworld in a suspense-driven story that balances crime, history, and psychological tension.

29: This Tamil romantic drama follows a directionless 29-year-old man whose relationship with an ambitious IAS aspirant forces him to confront his own future. The film explored themes of love, identity, and personal growth, resonating with audiences through its grounded storytelling.

Made in India: A Titan Story: Jim Sarbh and Naseeruddin Shah led this period drama inspired by the true story behind Titan Watches. Set in 1970s Bombay, the series followed the visionaries who challenged a smuggler-dominated market to build one of India’s most iconic homegrown brands.

Raja Shivaji: Riteish Deshmukh wrote, directed, and starred in this historical epic based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Following its record-breaking theatrical run, the film arrived on OTT after becoming the highest-grossing Marathi film of all time and one of India’s biggest box office successes of 2026.

KD: The Devil: Dhruva Sarja, Sanjay Dutt, and Shilpa Shetty Kundra starred in this Kannada action drama set in 1970s Bengaluru. Following the rise of an ordinary kerosene dealer into one of the city’s most feared underworld figures, the film combined large-scale action with an emotional character journey.

With another exciting month of releases ahead, July is set to keep the momentum going throughout theatres and streaming platforms alike.
