Times When Bollywood Actors Sang and Delivered Hit Songs
While dedicated playback singers usually shape the sound of Hindi cinema, there have been moments when actors sang for themselves and, surprisingly, delivered hits. With some being trained singers and others exploring the music and naturally settling behind the mic, these creative moments are largely accepted and embraced by audiences.
What makes these moments interesting is that audiences usually know immediately whether a song feels authentic or like a one-time experiment. And over the years, several Bollywood actors have gone far beyond novelty value, delivering songs that genuinely became part of pop culture. Sanskar Savvy wants to Celebrate these tracks, Explore the stories behind them, and Connect! with the stories behind them.
The Start of Ranveer’s Rap Era
Did you know that Ranveer Singh actually made his rapping debut in “Aadat Se Majboor” from Ladies vs Ricky Bahl in 2011? The rap section in the song came about spontaneously when the film’s director Maneesh Sharma challenged Ranveer via a text at 2 AM to write a rap based on his character in the film. By the next afternoon, he performed the verse for Sharma, who immediately wanted to include it in the film. Composed by Salim-Sulaiman, the rap section by Ranveer added to the song’s fun energy and delivered a perfect introduction to his character in the film.
The track introduced audiences to his fast-paced delivery and high-energy performance style, which would later become a major part of his musical identity in Gully Boy in 2019. Songs like “Apna Time Aayega” and “Mere Gully Mein” further showed how naturally he fit into rap-heavy performance tracks. Here, what made Ranveer’s transition into music work was commitment. Rather than treating it as a novelty, he fully embraced the performance side of rap culture, which audiences strongly connected with. He continues to make fun playback rap cameos and even sang for his hit “What Jhumka?” from his 2023 film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Ayushmann’s Playback Debut
Having no extensive training, but rather a passion for music, Ayushmann Khurrana remains a favourite actor-singer for many. He started singing at a young age and would often sing on train rides between home and college to make some extra money. He made his playback debut in Bollywood by singing “Pani Da Rang” from his debut film, Vicky Donor, in 2012. Ayushmann and Rochak Kohli wrote this song together in 2003 while at DAV College and even performed it there with their theatre group. While on the set of Vicky Donor, Ayushmann would often bring his guitar and sing, eventually performing this song for the director, Shoojit Sircar, who immediately loved it and incorporated it into the film’s plot.
This track quickly became one of the most successful songs of 2012, appealing to audiences for its simplicity, Punjabi lyrics, and emotional honesty. The song also helped establish Ayushmann as an artist, and he went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for it in 2013. The song remains one of the most loved romantic Bollywood songs, as Ayushmann continues to sing in playback, giving fans even more favourites such as “Sadi Gali” and “Nazm Nazm.”
Shraddha’s Soft Vocal Hits
Coming from a family with strong musical roots, Shraddha Kapoor is a trained singer who was introduced to music at a young age. Her maternal grandfather, Pandit Pandharinath Kolhapure, was a classical vocalist, and she is also the great-niece of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Shraddha made her playback debut with a stripped-down acoustic version of the hit song “Galliyan (Unplugged)” from her 2014 film Ek Villain. Audiences loved the soft and emotionally grounded performance, for which she also received the Global Indian Music Academy Award. Based on the love she receives, Shraddha continues to contribute vocals to several songs in her films, including fan-favourites like “Sab Tera”, “Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahungi” and “Do Jahaan.”
One of her biggest musical projects came through Rock On 2, where she recorded multiple songs for the film, including the electronic rock-inspired track “Udja Re.” The project allowed audiences to see a broader side of her musical abilities beyond softer romantic songs. What makes Shraddha stand out musically is consistency. Instead of treating playback singing like a one-time promotional moment, she continues to return to it throughout multiple films, slowly building a genuine connection with listeners who enjoy her softer vocal style.
Fun Musical Moments
In an industry so deeply rooted in and connected to music, seeing artists on screen step into the musical side is something audiences enjoy watching. Whether through playful tracks, character-inspired freestyling, or unplugged versions of their hit songs, they create an authentic experience for listeners. Sanskar Savvy likes to Celebrate, Explore, Connect! with audiences through these fun and unique moments, adding only more and more layers to the beloved cinematic experience.
