Why Awarapan 2 Has Everyone Feeling Nostalgic
When Awarapan first arrived in theatres in 2007, it did not become the box-office success one might expect from a film that has such a loyal following. Despite receiving positive reviews, the film was actually a commercial failure at the time. However, over the years, the Emraan Hashmi-led film developed a cult following and came to be regarded as one of Hashmi and director Mohit Suri’s most memorable works.
Now, 19 years later, Awarapan 2 is coming. It’s directed by Nitin Kakkar this time, with Emraan Hashmi reprising his role as Shivam Pandit, and it releases on August 14, 2026.
Here’s exactly what makes fans this excited for a sequel to a film that was released almost two decades ago.
What Made Shivam Pandit So Memorable
For many fans, Awarapan was always more than an action film. At its centre was Shivam Pandit, a deeply troubled, introverted gangster carrying grief, guilt, and heartbreak with him everywhere he went. His journey through love, loss, redemption, and sacrifice gave the film an emotional weight that stayed with audiences long after the film ended.
This is also why bringing Emraan Hashmi back as Shivam is so important to viewers. There is something inherently nostalgic about seeing him return to a character that remains one of his most remembered performances. According to the film’s production information, the screenplay went through multiple revisions over nearly two years before being finalised. This shows that this wasn’t simply a sequel rushed into existence because the original had developed a cult following. It’s nice to see creators embrace the love they receive for a project and continue to create with that kind of care, responsibility, and dedication, rather than just relying on sentimentality to win back viewers. Perhaps that’s the interesting thing about Awarapan 2.
How Awarapan’s Music Became Part of Its Legacy
Not to mention, Awarapan is inseparable from its music. The songs carry so much emotional weight and express the film’s plot so vividly; they’ve been a constant favourite for listeners for all these years. Songs like “Toh Phir Aao” and “Tera Mera Rishta” have remained very memorable and are still in many playlists even today. It is difficult to separate Awarapan from that particular sound: melancholic, romantic, intense, and just a little devastating. For fans, hearing those familiar notes again is almost like opening a door to a very specific era of Bollywood. It’s a very nostalgic and irreplaceable feeling, which is why, as a listener, the music is such an essential part of the film and the emotion.
The sequel is also attempting to lean into the musical legacy, featuring music from composers including Pritam, Mithoon, and Amaal Mallik. The soundtrack also includes the rendition of “Tera Mera Rishta Continues” and the fresh “Yeh Awarapan.” The music for this film is riveting as well; it sounds new yet carries a familiar tone and style, which aligns perfectly with one’s expectations for the film and its soundtrack.
Why Awarapan 2 Has So Much to Live Up To
When a movie becomes emotionally important to people, fans don’t just remember the story. They remember how it made them feel, which is why sequels to such cult films can be difficult to make. That means Awarapan 2 cannot simply recreate the visual language, songs, or emotional beats of the first film and expect nostalgia to do all the work; the storyline, new cast members, and changes over time must add to the original feeling rather than take away from it.
The film’s makers have acknowledged this as well. Bilal Siddiqui and Nitin Kakkar, the film’s writer and director, respectively, emphasized that they didn’t want to rely solely on nostalgia for the original film. Instead, they wanted to maintain Shivam’s character and persona while giving him meaningful direction. By preserving elements that made the original work, such as angst, love, devotion, redemption, and the heartwarming music, the creators want to give these themes a new story to live in.
To make a promising sequel, this distinction is important because the goal isn’t to redo Awarapan. It’s to explore what Shivam’s story would look like after all these years.
The Next Chapter Awaits
Whether the sequel can recreate the magic of the original is something only the film can answer. But the fact that people are still talking about Shivam nearly two decades later is a story in itself. The songs, the memories, Shivam Pandit, and everything that made Awarapan so deeply personal to its audience are finding their way into a new chapter.
Now, we get to see where Shivam’s story takes us next!
