Living the Dream: Kian on Dancing with Sunidhi Chauhan’s U.S. Tour
For many performers, touring with an artist they’ve grown up admiring is the ultimate dream. For dancer, performer, and choreographer Kian Gupta, that dream is unfolding in real-time as he travels across the U.S. with Sunidhi Chauhan’s concert tour.
A Dream Job Come True
“It’s been an insane experience,” Kian shares. “First of all, shout out to Sherlyn Fernandes who is the choreographer of the show for trusting me in the process of assisting and creating with her and having me perform alongside. It’s honestly a dream job for any dancer to be on tour, performing on stage with one of their all-time favorite artists. I’m so happy that I get to live that dream!”
What Kian looks forward to most each night is seeing how the crowd responds to Sunidhi and how she interacts with them. “It’s actually a difficult question to answer ’cause our show pretty much has so many levels to it, but what I’d say is to see her interact with the crowd and how the audience responds throughout the show is probably the part I look forward to the most, ’cause it’s always different every show.”
The Pre-Show Ritual
As high-energy as the performances are, Kian’s pre-show ritual is all about grounding. “Before getting on stage, I personally go into a more quiet space, contain the energy, warm up, do my makeup and get into our outfits. Then we all say a little prayer holding hands together before we get on stage.”
Behind the Scenes: What Fans Don’t See
But their pre-show ritual isn’t the only thing audiences don’t see. There’s also a lot that happens behind the scenes that fans might not realize, especially the level of coordination and awareness it takes to adapt in real time. For Kian and the rest of the crew, that focus starts well before stepping on stage.
“Behind the scenes, there is a lot of work and thought that goes into putting up the show. When on stage, there is a high amount of being alert and listening that happens besides us doing our job of performing. Since it’s all live, there are times when the audience’s energy does push us and there may be an extra interaction or extra lines being sung… everyone has to be alert and improvise… [so] it all looks so in sync, which luckily, we all are so in tune that we all adjust immediately to any change that happens on stage. It’s always super fun, though.”
Show Favorites
When asked if he has a favorite song or performance from the setlist that he loves being part of, Kian said “My favorite song to perform changes from time to time, but currently it’s Race. The arrangement of it and how it sounds, plus visually with what we do with it and with the lights, is my favorite currently.”
Working with Sunidhi
Of course, the heart of the tour is Sunidhi herself and Kian couldn’t speak more highly of her. “She is probably one of the [most humble] people I’ve ever worked with. She is such an inspiration, honestly, and the best thing about her is her human quality and how she treats people. She’ll remember the smallest details and really cares for her team. She’s heavily involved in every aspect of the show and looks into every detail. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s not just “I Am Home” in the name, she literally makes us feel like we are home ’cause that’s the warmth she exudes.”
Touring Across the U.S.: New Places, New Audiences
And while the show is at the center of it all, getting to travel across the U.S. has added another layer to the experience. “Touring the concert is a lot of fun because we get to take a show that we worked so hard on to new places. In this case, all the way across to the other side of the world, which is America. It’s a new audience, which is always interesting and fun. I personally looked forward to the LA show, which we just finished, and it was everything I could have asked for. Growing up, Hollywood is like a dream, and you hear so much about it. Getting to go to the land of stars and perform there is a massive dream come true, and it feels surreal that it’s happened.”
