Italia T10 Brings Franchise Cricket to Rome This November
Rome has hosted centuries of sport, from football nights that shake the Stadio Olimpico to athletics meets that draw crowds from across Europe. Cricket, however, has usually lived in quieter corners of the city through club grounds, training sessions, and weekend fixtures that rarely reach a national audience. That begins to change this November.
Italia T10 Cricket, Italy’s first city-based franchise league, is set to launch in the capital. The short-format competition gives Italian cricket a new stage and offers fans a different way to experience the sport. For a country still shaping its cricket identity, the league creates another opportunity to Celebrate, Explore, Connect! with the game as it continues to grow.
Why T10 Makes Sense for Italy
The league is scheduled to run November 7–15, 2026, with six franchises competing in Rome.
T10 has grown in several emerging cricket markets due to its simplicity. Matches are shorter, organizers can schedule multiple games in a day, and viewers unfamiliar with cricket do not need to spend several hours to follow the result.
That makes the format particularly interesting for Italy. The challenge is not developing players. Italian cricket needs to reach people who may know very little about the sport. Every match is expected to be played in Rome and streamed to more than 30 countries. That gives Italian players exposure beyond domestic club cricket and gives the league an opportunity to see whether a franchise model can attract a wider audience.
Who Is Behind Italia T10 Cricket?
Apex T10 Ltd, a UK-based company founded by former cricketers Nadeem Shahid and Aamir Akhtar, is behind the competition. The company has focused on developing franchise competitions in emerging cricket markets, with Italy becoming its first host country.
The decision makes sense for a country with a growing cricket community and a national federation seeking to build greater structure around the sport. A franchise tournament gives organizers another platform to test what professional domestic cricket in Italy could look like.
Federation Support and ICC Alignment
The Italian Cricket Federation has formally endorsed the league and is coordinating the ICC sanctioning process. Commissioner Gianfranco Ravà described the initiative as aligned with the federation’s long-term development goals, emphasizing the importance of structure, professionalism, and sustainability in new projects.
That federation backing gives Italia T10 Cricket a clear place within the domestic landscape rather than positioning it as a separate venture operating on its own. It also gives the league a more established administrative path as it prepares for its first season.
Leadership With Experience Across Two Cricket Worlds
Shahid brings years of first-class cricket experience with Essex and Surrey, along with coaching experience and business ventures outside the sport. Akhtar, a former Nepal international, founded the Everest Premier League and has also worked closely with Nepal’s cricket administration.
Their backgrounds bring together experience from established professional cricket and emerging markets that have had to build their own structures and audiences. Italia T10 Cricket draws on both perspectives as the league looks to establish itself in Italy.
How LA 2028 Could Shape Italy’s Cricket Growth
Cricket’s return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028 adds another layer to Italy’s timing. As the sport gains international attention, countries outside its traditional strongholds are looking for ways to strengthen domestic competition, increase visibility, and create more opportunities for players.
While the Olympic competition will use the T20 format, a short franchise league can still help Italy broaden its player pool and introduce the sport to new audiences. Italia T10 gives the country another competitive platform as cricket’s global reach continues to expand.

As the inaugural season approaches, attention now turns to Rome and how the league will be received. Italia T10 Cricket will not transform the sport in Italy overnight, but it introduces a structure the country has not had before.
