Frederick Moves Forward With Washington Freedom Cricket Stadium Plan
The Washington Freedom franchise is one step closer to Celebrate, Explore, Connect! By establishing a permanent home. The Frederick City Council has approved the rezoning of approximately 24 acres on the city’s eastern side, allowing plans for a 10,000‑seat cricket stadium to advance. The site, currently a golf driving range near Route 144 and Interstate 70, is privately owned and will be developed by the team’s ownership group led by Sanjay Govil.
The franchise aims to complete the stadium by 2027. That schedule aligns with preparations for cricket’s return to the Olympic program in Los Angeles the following year. Govil has emphasized the importance of building a stable base for the team and strengthening the sport’s presence in the Washington metropolitan region.
Community Use and Economic Impact
The proposal includes more than a professional venue. Plans call for a cricket park and flexible community space that can host youth sports, concerts, festivals, markets, and school events. City officials estimate the stadium could attract around 100,000 visitors annually and generate nearly $2 million in tax revenue, providing a notable economic boost for Frederick.
Significance for Local Cricket
The Washington area has one of the largest amateur cricket communities in the United States, yet access to dedicated facilities has been limited. Coaches and organizers say the stadium could expand training opportunities and give families a consistent gathering place. If completed, it would become one of the few full‑scale cricket venues on the East Coast.
Part of a National Push for Dedicated Facilities
Major League Cricket has been working toward establishing purpose‑built stadiums across the country, with projects underway in Texas and California. The Frederick development places Washington Freedom among the franchises moving toward long‑term stability and a defined home environment. The project now enters additional review stages at the city, county, and state levels. While several approvals remain, the rezoning decision marks a significant advancement for the stadium plan and signals growing momentum for cricket in the region.
