An Ancient Epic Gets a Massive Cinematic Retelling

Director Nitesh Tiwari, known for “Dangal,” leads the project, while producer Namit Malhotra brings his visual-effects company DNEG’s experience to the production. Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita, and Yash takes on Ravana. Sunny Deol and Ravi Dubey also join the cast as essential characters. The story centers on the Hindu Religious Epic “Ramayana,” which retells Lord Rama’s sacrifice, the Demon Ravana’s quest for vengeance, and the prophecy that connects their destinies.

Hans Zimmer Meets A.R. Rahman

One of the film’s biggest talking points is its music. Two Academy Award-winning composers, Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, have joined forces on the score. Zimmer brings decades of experience crafting large-scale Hollywood soundtracks, while Rahman draws on his distinctive melodic style and deep connection to Indian musical traditions.

Rahman has described the project as a three-year creative process and acknowledged the pressure on the producers to make the film work. He also sees the epic’s music as an opportunity to draw on India’s rich devotional and classical traditions.

Their collaboration raises an exciting question: how will the score balance the story’s spiritual roots with the scale of a global theatrical production?

Building a Whole Universe

Namit has outlined plans to expand “Ramayana: Rise of a Legend” beyond its two announced films, with potential spin-offs, video games, theme parks and other immersive experiences. That ambition places the project in the growing franchise business, where stories can extend well beyond cinema screens.

The strategy could introduce Indian mythology to audiences through different formats, but it also raises a question: how will the creators preserve the epic’s cultural and spiritual significance as they build a wider entertainment property? The answer will become clearer as audiences experience the film and see the choices these creators make as the project develops.

The Hype, the Expectations and the VFX Debate

The scale has generated excitement, but it has also brought scrutiny. Some viewers have criticized the visual effects in early promotional footage, while others have questioned the casting and the film’s interpretation of familiar characters. Yash has urged audiences to watch with an open mind rather than focus only on individual VFX details, highlighting the pressure on the team to deliver both a compelling adaptation and the technical spectacle it promises.

A deeper responsibility is also at play. “The Ramayana” holds religious and cultural significance for millions, and many regard its characters as sacred figures rather than simply characters in a story. That makes choices around their portrayal, the film’s dialogue, and its visual interpretation especially sensitive. Audiences may have different expectations of how the epic should appear on screen, and the filmmakers must navigate those expectations while bringing their own creative vision to the story.

The campaign claims to reflect the story’s cultural importance. To that end, Namit has called “Ramayana” a story that belongs to every Indian, while a planned pay-per-view release on JioHotstar after the theatrical run aims to reach audiences who cannot access cinemas. That approach balances the push for a big-screen experience with wider home-viewing access, although viewers in India will need to pay separately for the on-demand option.

The Big Reveal Awaits This Diwali

“Ramayana: Rise of a Legend” carries considerable expectations, pressure to stay authentic to religious values, a high-profile cast, and a musical partnership that deserves attention. Its ambitions are clear; the film itself will have to show how well its visuals, performances, music, and storytelling come together.

At Sanskar Savvy, we’re here to Celebrate, Explore, Connect with our viewers! And this November, “Ramayana: Rise of a Legend” gives audiences a chance to revisit a familiar epic through a new cinematic lens. We’re excited to see what this film holds and the audience’s thoughts on the rendition.
