The Story Behind Bollywood’s Hitmaking Duo: Vishal-Sheykhar
Two artists. Two different styles. One blockbuster duo whose music continues to top charts after over 2 decades together. When Vishal-Sheykhar came together, they turned into one of Bollywood’s most enduring partnerships. Recognized for introducing techno music in Bollywood, they brought a fresh perspective and created consistent hits that are now embedded in popular culture.
Now, on yet another leg of the show with their ‘The Superhit Tour’, Sanskar Savvy wants to Celebrate, Explore, Connect! with their journey and how this superhit duo came to be.
The Making of Vishal-Sheykhar
Before working as a duo, Vishal and Sheykhar were working individually on their music. Vishal was the vocalist of the Mumbai-based electronic band Pentagram, with experience in rock and alternative music, creating an experimental, bold sound of his own. Sheykhar was classically trained, worked on composing music and jingles, and was also part of the show Sa Re Ga Ma, which created a more emotional sound. Though they had been childhood friends, they first collaborated when they were individually making music for the film Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi in 1999, and decided to work together, forming the duo Vishal-Sheykhar that we know and love today.
Their earlier projects came from guest composing and individual songs for films, until they worked on their first full-length film soundtrack for Vadh (2002). They began gaining more attention after projects like Jhankaar Beats (2003), for which they also received the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent.
Building a Soundtrack for a Generation
Over time, the duo gained popularity and started producing music for mainstream Bollywood films as well, giving constant hits for films such as Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), and Dostana (2008), which quickly became a big part of pop music and dance culture for South Asian audiences. To date, their work spans some of Bollywood’s biggest films, shaping the sound of each era with evolving musical trends, while maintaining their signature high-energy, melody-driven sound, often inspired by pop, hip-hop, rock, and EDM.
International Collaborations and Global Hits
Over the course of their career, Vishal-Sheykhar have delivered music that has taken over weddings, dance floors, and playlists. They’ve introduced their audiences to new sounds and redefined party anthems.
They have also collaborated with many international artists, including Akon in 2011 for “Chammak Challo.” This collaboration was Akon’s first musical collaboration with an Indian artist. The song ranked in the Top 10 of iTunes’ “World Songs” list in eight countries, reaching No. 1 in three of them. The song became one of the most popular Indian songs of the decade and remains a party favourite today.
Vishal and Sheykhar continued their run of major releases with “Nashe Si Chadh Gayi” from Befikre in 2016, which became the first Indian song to cross 300 million views on YouTube and later 500 million. Songs like these continue to define their catalog and remain relevant long after their release.
