West Indies Stars Shine in ESPNcricinfo’s 2025 Cricket Roundup

Cricket fans across the Caribbean, and our own Sanskar Savvy members, have plenty to Celebrate, Explore, Connect! ESPNcricinfo’s annual 2025 cricket roundup has placed several West Indies players among the world’s best, reminding everyone that the region’s cricketing fire still burns strong.

Nicholas Pooran: Captain Fantastic

Trinidad’s very own Nicholas Pooran has been named captain of the Men’s T20 Team of the Year. His explosive batting and cool-headed leadership made him one of the standout performers in the shortest format. Pooran’s recognition isn’t just personal, but also a nod to the resurgence of West Indies cricket in T20s.

Shai Hope & Jayden Seales: ODI Powerhouses

Barbadian keeper-batsman Shai Hope earned his spot in the Men’s ODI Team of the Year, praised as the best keeper-batsman of 2025. Alongside him, Trinidadian pacer Jayden Seales stormed into the lineup with 27 wickets in just 11 innings, a performance that had ESPN’s panel almost unanimous in their choice.

This is historic: it’s the first time in a decade that multiple West Indies players have been named in ESPN’s ODI XI. That’s a big statement about where Caribbean cricket is heading.

Hayley Matthews: Flying the Flag for Women’s Cricket

On the women’s side, Hayley Matthews of Barbados was selected for the Women’s T20 Team of the Year. She’s the only Caribbean woman to make the cut, standing tall in a team dominated by Australian and English stars. Matthews’ consistency and leadership continue to inspire the next generation of female cricketers in the region.

Why This Matters

For years, West Indies cricket has been searching for a spark to reignite its global dominance. The recognition of Pooran, Hope, Seales, and Matthews shows that the talent pipeline is alive and well. These accolades are about individual brilliance, but they’re also about restoring pride and belief in Caribbean cricket.
