West Indies End 34-Year Wait with Historic ODI Series Win Over Pakistan

The West Indies men’s cricket team made history on August 12, 2025, when they defeated Pakistan by 202 runs in Tarouba to secure their first bilateral ODI series victory against the Asian side since 1991. Captain Shai Hope scored an unbeaten 120 and Jayden Seales took a career-best 6-18 to lead the Men in Maroon to a 2–1 series win. The result lifted West Indies to ninth in the ICC ODI rankings.

Hope’s Late Surge Changes the Game

On a challenging pitch, West Indies struggled to accelerate and remained under 200 runs by the 44th over. Hope changed the momentum with two consecutive sixes off Mohammad Nawaz. He partnered with Justin Greaves, who scored 43 not out, to add 100 runs in the final seven overs. West Indies finished on 294/6, their highest total of the series.

Hope’s 18th ODI century moved him to third on the West Indies all-time list and earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.

Seales Rips Through Pakistan’s Batting

Pakistan’s chase collapsed early. Seales removed openers Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique in the first three overs. He then produced the delivery of the match, a ball that seamed in and clipped Mohammad Rizwan’s off bail without hitting the stumps. Seales trapped Babar Azam lbw soon after to leave Pakistan reeling at 23/4.

The 21-year-old pacer finished with 6-18, the joint second-best ODI bowling figures by a West Indian, and claimed the Player-of-the-Series title. Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase took two wickets between them as Pakistan were bowled out for 92 in 27.2 overs.

A Win for the Caribbean

Cricket West Indies CEO Chris Dehring praised the team, saying, “These performances are a source of immense pride for the entire Caribbean and demonstrate what can be accomplished. This win gives every West Indian hope and confidence that we can continue to improve.”

The victory ended a 34-year drought against Pakistan and kept West Indies in contention for an automatic qualification spot at the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

From Hope’s batting masterclass to Seales’ fiery spell, this result sent a clear message that Caribbean cricket remains a force on the world stage.
