CSK’s Early-Season Troubles and Stephen Fleming’s Response
The 2026 IPL season has opened with pressure on the Chennai Super Kings, who have stumbled through their first three matches. After a difficult 2025 campaign, the team is still searching for stability, a moment to Celebrate, Explore, Connect!, and head coach Stephen Fleming has stepped forward to address the growing criticism.
A Team Still Finding Its Footing
CSK’s struggles aren’t limited to this season. Their current run includes only four wins in their last seventeen matches, a stretch that has raised questions about strategy, squad balance, and leadership. The franchise is in the middle of a rebuild, having brought in younger players such as Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma to reshape the roster after finishing at the bottom of the table last year.
Fleming Pushes Back on Criticism
Fleming acknowledged the scrutiny but rejected the idea that he had fallen behind modern T20 trends. He pointed to his active coaching roles in Major League Cricket and SA20 as evidence that he remains fully engaged with the format’s evolving demands. According to him, the issue isn’t a lack of tactical awareness but the natural challenges that come with transitioning to a younger squad.
Injuries Adding to the Strain
The team’s problems have been compounded by absences:
- Nathan Ellis has been ruled out for the season.
- MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis have missed matches but are expected to return soon.
These disruptions have forced CSK to shuffle roles and rely on inexperienced players earlier than planned.
Remainder of Schedule
Their upcoming matches will be a test of identity. Will CSK continue to drift, hoping the season magically rights itself, or will they finally show signs of a team with a plan?
A win won’t fix everything. A loss, though, will confirm what the numbers already suggest: this isn’t a rough patch. It’s a team searching for direction.
