Bhupen Hazarika: The Voice Of Assam
At Sanskar Savvy, we Celebrate, Explore, Connect! by remembering legendary artists who have transcended generations, languages, and borders. Today, we highlight the late Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, a singer, poet, and multi-disciplinary artist, whose work spanned music, film, and literature.
Hailing from Sadiya, Assam, Dr. Hazarika (Sept. 8, 1926 – Nov. 5, 2011) was a cherished artist who connected with audiences through his music and artwork across disciplines. Also known as SudhaKanta, he was widely known for writing on themes ranging from romance to humanity and social issues. For many, he is remembered as a central figure in Assam. For newer listeners, he is a discovery waiting to happen.
Early Musical Journey and Key Ideologies
Dr. Hazarika’s journey in music began at a young age, when his mother introduced him to the traditional music of Assam in his birth town. As he moved out to Tezpur in 1935 at the age of 10, he was discovered by noted Assamese artists, Jyotiprasad Agarwala and Bishnu Prasad Rabbha, who took him to Kolkata to record songs for films. While developing his music and style, Dr. Hazarika also ventured out of India to Columbia University, where he earned his PhD in Mass Communication, with a focus on educational broadcasting and his commitment to using music as the ‘instrument of social change’.
Authentic, Assamese Inspired Music Style
Rooted in folk traditions, Dr. Hazarika’s rich voice and poetic compositions convey a sense of authenticity that draws listeners in. He is widely noted for his ability to convey powerful, introspective emotions beyond language.
There’s an eternal quality to his compositions, as they draw on stories from Assam and combine regional folk influences into a broader musical arrangement. Tracks like “Moi Eti Jajabar” (I am a Wanderer) reflect his roots in Assamese music and storytelling, while songs like “O Ganga Behti Ho Kyon” capture how seamlessly he weaves social commentary into melody, something that music and art have always been relevant for.
A Career That Spanned Beyond Music
Dr. Hazarika’s work isn’t confined to a single role. Throughout his life, he built a career as a singer, songwriter, poet, composer, filmmaker, and public figure, each element amplifying the others.
He made music in multiple languages, including Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, and Assamese dialects, all often carrying powerful messages about humanity, social change, and brotherhood. With this, he brought Assamese culture to a national stage at a time when regional voices were rarely heard in mainstream spaces.
National Recognition and Lasting Impact
One of the most famous songs composed by Dr. Hazarika was “Dil Hoom Hoom Kare” from the 1993 film Rudaali. With lyrics penned by Gulzar, this song became a massive hit, and also had a second version featuring the celebrated singer Lata Mangeshkar. The track gained widespread critical acclaim, including a National Award for Best Music Direction for Hazarika, among many other recognitions, and a career that also earned him the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
An Invitation to Explore
In an era when virality and quick listens are prioritized, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s music offers a more emotional, attention-grabbing experience, grounding one in the stories and beauty of Assam.
