AR Rahman Tackles His Biggest Project Yet!
AR Rahman, the legendary composer and multi-award winner, has unveiled his latest project, the captivating music documentary “Headhunting to Beatboxing,” at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Rohit Gupta, this documentary dives deep into the heart of Nagaland, a northeastern Indian state. It explores how the Naga tribe transformed their violent past into a harmonious future through music.
The Birth of a Musical Renaissance
Nagaland, once known for its turbulent history, has experienced a significant cultural revival, largely thanks to the universal language of music. Rahman’s curiosity about the region’s music took him to the annual Hornbill Festival, where he witnessed firsthand the incredible transformation of the Naga youth. Inspired by what he saw, Rahman immediately collaborated with Gupta, known for his innovative iPhone filmmaking, to document this musical evolution.
From Violence to Harmony
Rahman emphasizes the powerful narrative behind the film for Variety India. “Gandhi’s non-violence inspired the world. Here, we have a community that shifted from violence not by choice but necessity, and now, they have a minister for music,” Rahman shares. This transformation is not just about traditional Naga music; it’s about young, independent artists who can capture the soul with a simple tune, making you feel like you’re anywhere in the world.
A Global Platform for Naga Musicians
The documentary doesn’t stop at showcasing Nagaland’s talent. Rahman is dedicated to providing these musicians with global exposure. Plans are underway to train them at his KM Music Conservatory, mentor them through the NEXA Indie Indian Artists initiative, and include them in his film compositions. There’s even a plan to feature them at the Hollywood Bowl, offering a stage for Indian indie musicians like never before.
Five Years in the Making
Director Rohit Gupta reflects on creating “Headhunting to Beatboxing,” which took five years and countless hours of footage. “Each note carries a story, each scene a journey. We can’t wait for audiences to experience the beauty we’ve uncovered,” Gupta tells Variety India. The film’s journey will continue as it heads to various festivals, with a significant premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2024, where it will compete for the best documentary film award.
Celebrate, Explore, Connect!
This documentary is not just a film; it’s a movement. It celebrates the healing power of music, explores the profound cultural shifts in Nagaland, and connects audiences worldwide to a story of transformation and hope. “Headhunting to Beatboxing” is a testament to how art can change lives and unite communities.
