Chandrika Tandon Wins First Grammy, Unites Communities Through Ancient Indian Chants

Chandrika Tandon, the Indian-American musician and business leader, made history by winning her first Grammy at 71. Her album Triveni won Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album at the 67th Grammy Awards, recognizing her commitment to preserving and sharing Indian classical music with the world. She embodies the spirit of Celebrate, Explore, Connect!

A Community Celebration

Tandon’s Grammy journey started with a 2009 nomination for Soul Call. She returned with Triveni in August 2024, this time as a winner. She collaborated with South African flautist Wouter Kellerman and Japanese cellist Eru Matsumoto, blending their styles to reflect the album’s namesake—the confluence of India’s three sacred rivers.

She accepted the award and said: “Music is love, music is light, and music is laughter. Let’s all be surrounded by love, light, and laughter.” Her words captured how music unites people across cultures and generations.

Bridging Heritage and Innovation

Born in Chennai, India, Tandon grew up immersed in Vedic chants and Carnatic music. She excelled in business, becoming the first Indian woman partner at McKinsey, but music remained central to her identity. She later founded Soul Chants Music, a nonprofit label focused on preserving Indian musical traditions.

Beyond music, Tandon actively supports education and philanthropy. In 2015, she and her husband Ranjan donated $100 million to the New York School of Engineering, which now bears their name. Her success showcases how she uplifts communities and cultures.

Why Triveni Resonates

More than just an album, Triveni offers a meditative experience that promotes healing and connection. The seven tracks, including Pathway to Light and Seeking Shakti, merge Sanskrit mantras with global instrumentation, making Indian spiritual music more accessible.

Her win celebrates the South Asian community and highlights the rich heritage of Indian classical music in today’s world.

A Shared Moment of Pride

Alongside fellow Indian-origin nominees like Ricky Kej and Anoushka Shankar, Tandon’s win reaffirmed the global appreciation for South Asian music and its cultural significance.

Continuing the Journey

Through Soul Chants Music, Tandon continues to create projects that blend tradition with modernity. She remains a cultural force in music, philanthropy, and community engagement.

Her Grammy win extends beyond personal achievement—it invites people worldwide to experience the transformative power of Indian classical music. With Triveni, Tandon ensures that these ancient sounds will continue to flow, uniting communities and generations across the globe. Celebrate, Explore, Connect!
