A.R. Rahman Curates Haazri Bringing Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, and More Together to Honor Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan
A musical celebration of heritage and harmony is set for January 17 as A.R. Rahman, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, and Shaan come together for Haazri, a special tribute concert honoring their late guru, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. The event marks his death anniversary and promises a night where culture, legacy, and melody unite. In true Sanskar Savvy spirit, it is a chance to Celebrate, Explore, Connect! through the timeless language of music.
A Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan awardee, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan was one of India’s most acclaimed classical vocalists and mentors. A master of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, he trained and guided some of the biggest names in Indian music, including Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Amit Kumar, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, and A.R. Rahman. His students also included artists like Alisha Chinai, Shilpa Rao, and Ranu Mukherjee. Known for his melodious voice and gentle teaching, Ustad Khan shaped the sound of Indian music for more than six decades, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and devotion that continues to inspire generations.
Curated by A.R. Rahman, Haazri will bring audiences an evening filled with nostalgia, emotion, and collaboration. “I am so excited to perform at Haazri for two consecutive years. This time around, I’ll curate a very special set in honour and remembrance of our legendary Ustad. I am really looking forward to taking the stage along with Ustad ji’s students Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, and Shaan,” Rahman shared.
For Hariharan, the night carries both passion and nostalgia. “Music aficionados can expect a never-before-seen act, as there will be a lot of energy and emotions on stage,” he said. Shaan added, “A.R. Rahman is creating something really special with Guru Ji’s songs and his bandishes. I’m a little nervous because it’s not my genre of music, but I’ll give it my best.”
For Sonu Nigam, the concert holds deep personal meaning. “Our guru, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahab, lives inside us forever. I always feel his presence around me. He left a family for me in the form of his children and his students. Performing together for Haazri is going to be a very emotional experience for me.”
With these musical legends sharing one stage for the first time, Haazri will be a night that celebrates the soul of Indian music and the bond between teacher and disciple. The performance will honor a legacy that continues to inspire artists and audiences across generations.
