DDLJ, Reinvented in English: Vishal-Shekhar’s Bold Leap to the Global Stage
With Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical, composers Vishal-Shekhar bring a bold, cross-cultural vision to the stage. Inspired by Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, affectionately known as DDLJ, the production draws from one of the most iconic and longest-running films in Indian cinema history. Since its 1995 debut, DDLJ has held a special place in pop culture, celebrated for its story of love, tradition, and the complexities of identity.
Nearly 30 years later, that legacy continues with a new chapter, which is told through 18 original English songs, written specifically for this production. Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani infuse the show with their signature emotion and energy, creating a score that honors the heart of the original while speaking directly to today’s global audience. The music feels contemporary, deeply rooted, and proudly desi—redefining how South Asian stories are shared with the world.
Original Music, New Voice
This score is a significant creative milestone for the duo. Known for pushing the boundaries of Indian music, Vishal-Shekhar have composed a complete set of original songs that blend musical theatre melodies with the spirit of Punjabi pop. Every song is written in English, yet carries the rhythm, emotion, and cultural nuance that fans have come to expect from them.
It’s a first-of-its-kind achievement: a full musical soundtrack by Indian composers for a production built for Broadway, the West End, and beyond. Their music brings depth and dimension to Simran and Rog’s story, highlighting the tension and joy of navigating identity, love, and tradition.
Casting New Light on a Classic Story
Jena Pandya and Ashley Day star as Simran and Rog, bringing the romance to life with heart and humor. Pandya, who starred in Bhangra Nation and Mamma Mia, steps into a role with deep cultural significance, while Day brings charisma and comedy shaped by years on stage and screen.
Their performances are powered by a script from Legally Blonde and Mean Girls writer Nell Benjamin, with direction by Aditya Chopra, who first told this story on screen nearly 30 years ago.
A South Asian Milestone in Musical Theatre
Performances begin May 29, 2025, at the Manchester Opera House, with a limited run through June 21. The production has already turned heads in the U.S., and all eyes are now on the UK stage where this reimagined love story will take center stage once again.
Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical brings Indian creativity to the forefront of global entertainment. The production celebrates the legacy of DDLJ, introduces fresh talent, and demonstrates the power of South Asian stories to connect with audiences worldwide.
This is how we celebrate our roots, explore new creative ground, and connect through art that speaks across languages and borders.
That’s the sound of South Asia stepping into the spotlight louder and prouder than ever.
